2006 PQ Lightning Summer Classic Tournament

Tournament Rules

The current A.S.A. Official Rules of Softball will be in effect unless otherwise stipulated.

1. Check-in

 
A.

Check in at the registration desk one hour prior to your first game. Check in is available only at the Canyonside location.

B.

Bring your completed roster, proof of age, and proof of insurance.

C.

Rosters are limited to 15 players. No player can be added after check-in.

2. Game time

 
A.

Game time is forfeit time, the only exception is for the early Friday games where there will be a 10 minute grace period.

B. A game may start when 8 players are present. However, an “out” will be incurred every time the “missing” spot comes up in the order.
C.

During pool play, games will be one hour and 20 minutes or seven innings, whichever comes first. No new innings shall start after the time limit has been reached. Championship games will not have a time limit.

D. During pool play games may end in a tie. During bracket play, the "international tie-breaker" rule shall be in effect.
E. Teams have the option of batting their entire line-up and having free defensive substitutions. Teams choosing that option may use the "last out" as a courtesy runner for the pitcher and catcher. Teams not choosing the "bat-around" option must then abide by the ASA rules on substitutions.
F. Mercy Rule: For all tournament games, the game will be over if a team is ahead by 8 runs after 5 innings (or 4 ½ innings if the home team is ahead).
G. Run Limit: Run limits, per innings, are as follows:
8U (4 runs), 10U (6 runs), 12U & 14U (no limit).
H. Pitching distances are as follows:
8U (30 feet). 10U (35 feet). 12U and 14U (40 feet).
I. Base distances are as follows:
8U (55 feet). 10U, 12U and 14U (60 feet).

3. Ground rules

 
A.

No practice on infield dirt. Teams may warm up between the foul line and the fence.

B.

The team listed listed first or on the top of the bracket shall occupy the first base dugout. The only exception will be for teams playing consecutive games on the same field, in which case they will not be asked to change dugouts.

C. Home team will be determined by a coin toss at the pregame meeting with umpires and coaches.
D. Home team will be responsible for the official scorekeeper. The official scorekeeper will not be allowed to announce "out of order" batters.
E. Each team is responsible for cleaning the dugout thoroughly after each game.
F. Game balls will be provided.
G. No artificial noisemakers allowed.
H. No alcoholic beverages in the field areas.
I. Team managers must have control of their player, coaches, and team followers at all times, on and off the field of play.

4. Protests

 
A.

All protests will be finalized on the field at the time of the protest by the home plate umpire and tournament official.

B.

Protests must be limited to misapplication of rules. Judgment calls by the umpire cannot be protested.

5. Special playing rules for 8U and 10U

 
A.

Stealing as defined in the ASA rulebook for 10U. One base per pitch, runner at third cannot steal home, a play at a base does not release the runner from 3rd.

B. No dropped third strike.
C. No infield fly rule.
D. Balls:
8U – 10” Worth RIF
10U – 11” Worth RIF
E. Run Limit:
8U – 4 run limit per inning, in all games
10U – 6 run limit per inning, in all games
F.

8U Championship Game: 6 innings

6. Bracket Seeding

All teams will advance to the single elimination bracket play. Seeding will be based on the following criteria:
1.

Won, loss, tie record

2. Head to head results
3. Runs allowed
4. Runs scored
5.

Coin toss
