Construction on the 2 new softball fields (#8 and #9) at Canyonside Recreation Center began on June 7, 2004. It is estimated that the construction project will take about 60 days to complete.

The starting of this project comes after many years of planning. With (1) the final permits from the City of San Diego in hand, and (2) the complete architectural plans and drawings approved by the Penasquitos Recreation Council, and (3) several contractors ready to donate their time and resources to build the fields, the PQGSA Board of Directors unanimously approved the funds necessary to pay for the materials to build the fields.
