5. When does a batter get a walk?
Batters get walks depending on their division as shown in the following table:
How batters complete their "at bats" |
T-Ball
No
All batters hit off the T until the ball is put into play. |
Mini-Rookies
No
Note: Balls and strikes are not called on any pitches in Mini-Rookies.
Before Day Light Savings Time To put the ball in play, the batter gets the following: 3 pitches from the player pitcher (only for the first 3 batters of every inning), then 4 pitches from the batter's manager or designee, then the batter gets to hit off the T until the ball is put into play.
After Day Light Savings Time
To put the ball in play, the batter gets the following: 3 pitches from the player pitcher (only for the first 3 batters of every inning), then 4 pitches from the batter's manager or designee to put the ball into play.
Foul Ball Rule: As long as the batter continues to foul off the last pitched ball from the manager, the batter gets another pitch.
Called Out Rule: If the last pitched ball from the manager is not fouled off or put into play, the batter is out.

Rookies
No
Batters are out after 3 strikes from the player pitcher. After 4 balls from the player pitcher, batters then get 4 pitches from the batter's manager or designee to put the ball in play. Balls and strikes will not be called when the manager pitches and base runners may not steal bases.
If the batter fails to put the ball into play after 4 manager pitches, then the batter will be called out on strikes. There will be no extra manager pitches, no matter what.

Mini-Minors
Yes
Batters are out after 3 strikes from the player pitcher. Batters are awarded first base after 4 balls from the player pitcher. There is no manager pitching in this division. |
Minors
Yes
Same as Mini-Minors |
In Rookies, Mini-Minors, and Minors, if a batter is hit by a player pitched ball, the umpire may award the batter first base, provided the batter did not intentionally try to get hit with the ball and the batter made an effort to get out of the way. In Mini-Rookies, players shall not be awarded first base because the goal of this division is to let the players hit the ball.
